Differences between Dermal Filler and Botulinum Toxin

Here at Face Hub Facial Aesthetics, we know that it can be difficult for clients to know the difference between dermal fillers and Botulinum Toxin. This is because for years any facial aesthetic injectables all fell under the one name of Botulinum Toxin or Anti-Wrinkle Injections. The main difference between the two is that Botulinum Toxin is used to freeze the muscles and stop wrinkles caused by ageing or expressions. Dermal fillers however are formulated with hyaluronic acid to fill, smoothen or plump areas which have lost volume. Even though they treat different things they can be used in the same treatment at times. To make it easier to understand we will outline the differences between the two products.

Uses

Botulinum Toxin

This is a muscle relaxer which is made from bacteria. It has been used for over two decades and was originally used to treat neurological disorders that weaken the muscles, migraines and other health conditions. With facial aesthetics it is used to freeze or relax the muscle near wrinkles to stop the movement which causes these wrinkles to appear. As we age it is normal for us to get wrinkles around the forehead, mouth and eyes which are the main treatment areas for Botulinum injections. It is not usually used for fine lines which are caused due to loss of volume in the skin.

Dermal fillers

Dermal fillers are formulated with hyaluronic acid which is naturally in the skin. When we age, collagen and elastin which keeps the skin plump and tight starts to break down. This creates loss of volume, sagging skin and fine lines. Dermal filler is injected into these areas to refill the loose area of the skin and make them plump and youthful looking. They can also be used in improving the appearance of wrinkles and scarring.

Efficacy

Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum Toxin injections are known for their efficiency in reducing the appearance of wrinkles. Most patients will see a noticeable difference after about a week. There can be some side effects such as swelling or bruising but this will usually fade after about a week. Once the results start to fade you will need additional treatments to keep the results.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal Filler injections have a very high efficiency rate. The best dermal filler product which is used here in Face Hub Facial Aesthetic is known as Juvéderm.  Nearly 90% of patients who have had Juvéderm treatment have seen positive and satisfactory results. Similar to Botulinum Injections once the results start to fade additional injections will be needed.

Longevity

Botulinum Toxin

Botulinum Toxin results usually last up to 3 or 4 months before additional injections will be needed. This is slightly shorter than dermal filler injections. In some patients it can last longer. People who have had this treatment done for the first time usually notice that it doesn’t last but when you have had a second or multiple treatments it can last a lot longer.

Dermal Filler

Dermal Filler can last a lot longer than Botulinum Toxin. Depending on the area being treated, the amount of filler, the type of filler and the patient’s metabolism to break it down, dermal filler can last between 3 months and two years. Once the filler starts to break down, additional injections will be needed. Similar to Botulinum Injections, dermal filler lasts longer the more treatments you have done.

Recovery Time

The recovery of Botulinum Toxin and Dermal filler is basically the same. Both treatments are non-invasive and quick. Most people can go about their normal day after having these treatments. Both injections can lead to minor swelling and bruising but this will usually go down within a week or two. Results for both treatments can be seen instantly but once the bruising and swelling goes down the final results are noticeable.
