Marionette Lines

At Face Hub Facial Aesthetic Clinic in Bayside Medical Centre, Sutton our highly trained facial aesthetic medical practitioners can soften the lines around your mouth. Dermal fillers such as Juvederm allow our skilled doctors to beautifully enhance the shape of your face and soften lines and wrinkles.

Marionette lines are wrinkles that occur on the face as we age. This wrinkle runs down the face between the mouth and chin which can make the lower area of the face look like it is sagging. Around the mouth can be prone to wrinkles and fine lines as the skin is a lot thinner than other areas. They usually start to be noticeable in our 40’s which is a popular age group to have dermal filler treatment to fix them. Marionette lines are caused the same way all wrinkles are. Once collagen and elastin production decreases in the body it causes the skin to lose its plump appearance and begin to sag. Gravity also starts to pull down the skin once it starts to sag which makes these lines more noticeable. Long term exposure to the sun, stress and an unhealthy diet can also have an impact on the skin creating wrinkles. Genetic can also cause these lines as some people get them and some do not have any even when they are much older.

Depressor Anguli Oris is the muscle that attaches to each corner of the mouth. When the muscle is toned excessively it will pull down the sides of the mouth resulting in a droopy lower face or marionette lines.

Anaesthetic cream is placed on the areas to be injected for 15 minutes. Dermal filler is then injected into precise locations of the marionette lines and the skin is massaged to smoothen the dermal filler. You will have a mirror throughout your treatment so that you can see the immediate results. The whole treatment takes 30 minutes.

Dermal filler is inadvisable in patients who are pregnant or breastfeeding.

The aftercare of dermal filler in marionette lines is very simple.

  • Minor bruising or swelling can occur but make up can be put on this if needed. This will fade in a week or two.
  • The final results will be noticeable within 3 to 10 days. It usually lasts up to 12 months depending on how much dermal filler was used and how quick the patient’s body dissolves.
  • If it is your first time getting this treatment it is recommended to come for a check up after two weeks to assess the results and see if it needs a top up.
  • Patients usually have top up treatments every 6 to 12 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can fillers fix marionette lines?

Dermal filler is one of the best treatments to reduce the appearance of marionette lines. It is not a permanent treatment so it must be topped up but it has a very effective outcome once the treatment is done. Dermal fillers are injected into the skin around the area to plump it and get rid of any sagging or wrinkles. This treatment is also non invasive and can be dissolved if the patient is not happy with it.

Is dermal filler for marionette lines reversible?

Yes. Like most procedures using dermal fillers with hyaluronic acid, if the client is not happy with the results it will usually fade as it is a temporary treatment. The filler can also be dissolved before it fades so the client does not have to wait.

Is the procedure painful?

Marionette dermal filler can be a little bit uncomfortable. Here at Face Hub one of our aesthetic doctors will apply a topical numbing cream on the area and wait about 15 minutes before starting treatment. This will reduce any discomfort that a client might experience during the procedure.

At what age do marionette lines appear?

In most cases people start to develop these wrinkles in their late 30s to early 40s. When they first occur, they are not noticeable but as we age, they can get worse. In rare cases they can become noticeable to some people in their 20s.

How long do fillers last in marionette lines?

Out of all of the areas in the face where dermal filler is usually injected, Marionette lines are one of the areas where filler lasts the longest. In some cases, the results can last for up to 2 years. They will usually last at least a year.
